In 2005, the Minnesota Vikings finished the season with a winning record of 9-7 but missed the playoffs.

In 2006, under new coach Childress, the Vikings finished the season 6-10.

In the 2007 NFL Draft, the Vikings selected RB Adrian Peterson. The remaining selections were WR Sidney Rice, CB Marcus McCauley, DE Brian Robison, WR Aundrae Allison, OLB Rufus Alexander, QB Tyler Thigpen and WR Chandler Williams.
